Monika Müller spent over five years researching a work by William Turner in the north of England, which she researched on several trips there.
A comprehensive cycle of 120 drawings has emerged from her sketching expeditions in several stages in the north of England, bringing an incomplete commission by Turner to completion.
In February, the _957 Independent Art Magazine #162_Ways of Turner was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at zsuzsa’s gallery.

Saxophonist Thomas K.J. Mejer composed the piece Graphite Scores, consisting of 120 sounds for four bass flutes especially for this work, which premiered during the exhibition in March.
Graphite Scores will now be performed once again. This time, the concert will be accompanied by an installational image projection. In addition, 8 large billboards of the northern English landscape will frame the acoustic event within the wildly overgrown car park.

Turner Töne is a modular composition that spans an arc of sound over the 120 drawings of Ways of Turner.

Each drawing has its own sound/miniature. The modules should last between 4 and 30 seconds.

The work is especially composed for Ways of Turner in 120 sounds for 4 bass flutes and will premiere on March 2nd –

Last weekend David Hill and I set off on a madcap

Last weekend David Hill and I set off on a madcap endeavor to see whether William Turner might have actually observed the seldom occurrence with the full moon still present in the sky while simultaneously the rising sun is illuminating the mountain range along the right shore of lake Brienz.
DH calculated that the same constellation would have to occur on full moon 30th of September 2023 as it did when Turner visited late September / early October 1841.

Turner completed two consecutive watercolors of this scene (pic 2 and 3)

I first set off a day too early finding a magic moonset but long before the sun war rising (pic1).
I couldn’t resist but returning again on Saturday early morning 30th September , when the moon should have set an hour and 20 minutes later, so in time with the sunrise starting at around 7.15.
My second journey to Kienholz near Brienz, Turner’s viewing point for his WC, proved to be futile though: an overcast sky, neither sun nor moon anywhere near in sight.

DH found two webcams close to the desired viewing points for the clear Sunday morning sky, from which we both observed (in our respective places CH and GB) whether we could catch anything similar to the moon/sun conjunction of 1841. The moon had already shifted substantially in its orbit to the right but the whole scene still gave an impression of what also occurred and correctly was observed by Turner on his visit then, in 1841.
Although a webcam does not replace the actual experience, we “counted ourselves lucky to have witnessed anything like”. (DH)
